New Scholarships Established for SGA-Sponsored Workshops!

SGA has established two new scholarships for attendance to the SGA-sponsored Spring/Summer Workshop and the Pre-Conference Workshop. The scholarships, covering workshop registration, will be offered for the first time with the 2008 Spring/Summer Workshop. All SGA members and those working or studying in the archival field in Georgia will be eligible.

An endowment fund has been setup for the ongoing support of the scholarships. SGA members can contribute by adding a donation to their 2008 membership renewals and by donating to and participating in the 2008 Annual Scholarship Auction to be held on November 8th, at 6:00 p.m. at the CSU Theatre on the Park in Columbus. For more information on the auction and instructions for donating items, please visit http://soga.org/am/2007/auction.php.

The scholarships will be named by current SGA members for significant SGA members or supporters through an online voting process leading up to the SGA Annual Meeting. Nominations are being accepted until October 5th by email to lspracher@savannahga.gov or Christine.decatanzaro@library.gatech.edu. Please include one or two sentences on why the nominated person is worthy of this honor.

October is Georgia Archives Month

In October, Georgia will celebrate its 8th archives celebration — Georgia Archives Month. This year’s theme is “Georgia History: Stay Tuned.” There’s still plenty of time to plan special events such as exhibits, tours, lectures, workshops, collection viewings, etc. For ideas, visit our website at http://www.soga.org/aw/index.php and click on one of the past years under the “Events” section.

The purpose of Archives Month is to celebrate the value of Georgia’s historical records, publicize the many ways historical records enrich our lives, and recognize those who maintain our communities’ historical records. This is the ideal time to call attention to your organization or local government, and its work in preserving Georgia’s documentary heritage.

We encourage you to think of ways in which your organization or local government can celebrate Archives Week in your community. If you are planning an event, please email archivesmonth@soga.org and we will add your event to the Archives Week web site.

If you have any questions, please view our web site at http://www.soga.org/aw/index.php or contact archivesmonth@soga.org (Sara Saunders, 865-7155; Sally Loy, 770-427-2117 x 107). Thank you.
