New Membership Site Debuts!

The new membership management site for the Society of Georgia Archivists may be accessed via the web host Wild Apricot at http://societyofgeorgiaarchivists.shuttlepod.org. Through this portal, members are able to update their membership profiles, register for events, and renew their memberships, all online! Non-members can also fill out a membership application and pay their fees through this site.

Scholarship Deadline Approaching

Larry Gulley Scholarship
Deadline to Apply: August 15, 2008 (applications must be received by this date)

The Larry Gulley Scholarship provides the registration fee for one person to the annual meeting of the Society of Georgia Archivists (SGA) plus one year’s membership in SGA. SGA’s 2008 annual meeting will be held in Athens, Georgia, November 13-14, 2008. For more information about the meeting or SGA, please visit http://www.soga.org.

Eligible applicants include those engaged in compensated or volunteer archival work at any level in a Georgia institution, graduate students preparing for a career in archives at a Georgia college or university, and SGA members. Scholarship Recipients

The SGA Scholarship Committee has chosen Alison Bentley, Reference Archivist at the Georgia Historical Society, as the 2008 recipient of the Edward Weldon Scholarship to attend the Society of American Archivists annual meeting in San Francisco! Alison says this was a great welcome to SGA and Georgia, having recently moved from Tennessee.

John Kennison, Director/Archivist, for the Bryan-Lang Historical Library in Camden County, has been selected by the Scholarship Committee to receive the 2008 Brenda S. Banks Educational Workshop Scholarship, for the SGA Spring Workshop given on June 30th.
John said he now feels like an official member of SGA!

Announcing NAGARA Annual Meeting, Social Event

NAGARA’s (National Association of Government Archivists and Records Administrators) Annual Meeting is being held in Atlanta this year, at the Westin Peachtree Plaza Hotel, from July 23 to 26, 2008. If you deal with records or archives, you won’t want to miss this
year’s meeting, “All Roads Lead to Records — Making the Journey Count.” The NAGARA website (www.nagara.org) offers a wealth of information regarding the program and registration, for all SGA members interested in attending.

A social opportunity also awaits SGA members. Come join attendees of NAGARA’s Annual Meeting on the evening of Friday, July 25, starting at 5 p.m. at the Georgia Archives/NARA in Morrow, Georgia. A great time will be had by all as attendees consider themerits of Georgia and Alabama BBQ and enjoy a truly southern evening of BBQ, iced tea (sweet, of course), homemade cake, and other delicacies. Brenda S. Banks Educational Workshop Scholarship

Starting in 2008, the Society of Georgia Archivists will each year award a scholarship for attendance at the SGA-sponsored Spring/Summer Workshop. Past SGA workshops have addressed a variety of themes and issues faced by archivists and archival institutions, including electronic records, exhibits, donor relations, digital collections, and funding. The purpose of the Spring/Summer Workshop and the workshop scholarship is to enhance archival education.

The registration fee for the successful scholarship applicant will be waived by the Society of Georgia Archivists. Recipients will be responsible for any travel fees associated with attending the workshop. Please note that the scholarship winner is responsible for submitting their workshop registration form by the registration deadline. After the workshop, the recipient will submit a brief article on the experience for use in the SGA Newsletter.
